Dr. Strangelove gives us a look inside the society of America when relations with Russia were fragile. Despite the film’s humor, underneath it shows the worry at the heart of America, the threat of a nuclear war with Russia. No one was sure what would happen, if there was going to be a war, and if so, which side would attack first. Dr. Strangelove also captures the ideas of people wanting to strike Russia first because they thought they could wipe out the threat before Russia attacked, which is seen when Ripper goes insane and sends out nuclear weapons against Russia against his Presidents orders in order to leave the country no choice but to commit to the war once the missiles have attacked their targets. There is also the issue of the United States using German scientists who they pardoned from a death sentence, because they had been working for Hitler, under the condition they would work for the U.S. instead. Although the U.S and Russia fought on the same side during World War II, they became rivals immediately afterwards.
In The Searchers, the film showed the society in the west, in Texas, three years after the Civil War, when there was still fighting between the pioneer settlers and the Native Americans. The film portrays the Native Americans as savages, who burn houses, scalp families of white men, and kidnap their women. It is also implied that they are horrible to their captives, as is seen when the rescued girls have all gone insane, or are too frightened to talk to anyone. However, it also shows a more civil side of the Native Americans when they trade peacefully with the westerners out in the desert. There is also a bias in the film, because when it was made, white Americans were the ones watching this, and they still thought of Native Americans as lesser people, and the film biases heavily against Native Americans. Although the film only shows the Native Americans being the villains, though there is a bit of clarification about why they fought, because the Native American chief says he takes many scalps for each of his son killed, and it shows the whites slaughtering whole villages of Native Americans
