In the first week of class, we compared the world today and the world of 1400 and saw a dramatic shift from a polycentric world in 1400 to today’s Eurocentric world. We discussed two competing theories about how this happened – the “Rise of the West” theory, and the less deterministic theory stressing contingency, accident, and conjuncture.
